progress in some things
This evening, I managed to ask someone out.

She said no, of course.

But I didn't a) stammer, b) turn into a quivering lump of jelly, or c) fail to realise that she was giving me a hint when she made an excuse. All of these are good, significant steps.

I just sometimes wish women didn't do the whole "subtle hints" thing and just said something like "we've only just met, I'd rather get to know you better in a large group first", or "ask me again in a week or so" rather than "um... I think my family might be taking me to North Berwick. To their caravan. Yeah."

It wasn't quite the first time we'd met - we had played together in a string orchestra many years previously, but it took us a little while to work this out.

Anyway, all this was at a rehearsal for my new piece. Wow. We've got 60 people singing it! It's sounding good! Well, it's sounding OK, and I think on Sunday when we have a decent organist (John Kitchen) it'll sound good. I don't actually like John Kitchen that much as a person (and the feeling appears to be mutual), but as an organist he's extremely good. And dead famous, and all that. I'm not sure he realises it's my piece he's playing though.

Potential problem is, Andrew, who's conducting and nominally in charge, sometimes misses a beat out. And if he does, and tells John that it was John's fault, John Kitchen will probably shout at him. I really hope that doesn't happen. Ah well. Andrew was diagnosed with kidney/bowel cancer back in December and given about two months to live, so it's pretty amazing that he's still alive, let alone conducting.

Otherwise, have mainly been working. The pretty sax players do want to come up, so that's nice. The group from Newcastle have paid a deposit, even better. Everything is under control. I should probably be doing bit more marketing now that I have time to do it. mmmmrrrp. Why is it that any free time I have, i can always think of something better I should be doing instead of wasting it?

Ah well, it's her loss...

And you're getting your piece sung by 60 people! I'm so impressed. I wish I could hear it.

Will do, if I can actually work out how to get something off a tape, onto a computer, and then into mp3 format... any ideas?

Connect your tape player's line out to your sound card's line in. Open a sound editing program on your computer (if you don't have one, try downloading GoldWave-- it's shareware, and it works really well; I've used it on several films and other professional projects). Push record in the sound editing program and push play on tape. If nothing records, check the "sound and video" menu in the control panel to make sure that a) your sound card is selected as the recording device, and b) the volume on the line in port is turned up. If you're still stumped, IM me and I can help you troubleshoot it.

Oh, this is all assuming you're using a PC... if you're using a Mac, the process is similar, but the specifics of which software/menus are going to be different, obviously.

Well done .. I wouldn't worry too much about the failure to pick up upon "subtle hints".

People vary enormously with what they think is subtle, and sometimes it's very hard to be clear. I find the best thing to do is to be really blatent - or wait for the other to clarify things.

Asking them out is the scary part - well done!

I'm not going to the thing on Monday, but I'll go to the LJ meetup on Tuesday I think - one night in Drouthy's is probably enough.

Are you sure she said no? That may sound like a stupid question, but on the rare occasions when a guy has asked me out and i've said "i can't because i've got something on that night" its generally the truth, and doesn't mean i wouldn't like to go out with him - just on another night!

Anyway, if she said no, she must be blind :)

Well, it's possible. Anyway, I'll see her on Sunday afternoon and perhaps things will clarify then.

"I just sometimes wish women didn't do the whole "subtle hints" thing"

what, you're saying men don't do that?
