Go for it. Linux is so much better, prettier, more logical and doesn't crash every five minutes. And it has a tea-timer!

Good luck if you do actually install it (chris)! It can be a pain and a time-sink getting stuff working the way you want initially, and getting used to the different way of thinking. But once it's running it's solid, and you get to feel virtuous. Also Linux has security updates too!

(however, I'm not feeling virtuous at the moment, using Windows XP and now a Mac, neither of which are crash-prone, it has to be said.)

Yes, I forgot to mention that because I have my own Linux geek who does my installing for me.

Oh, and Linux is über-secure compared to Windows (any Windows).

I have no experience on XP but Windows 2000 certainly has all sorts of annoying little things that go wrong all the time...

I'd advise doing what I'm doing - fit another HD (or partition your existing one if it's big and you're feeling brave), put Linux on that, and run the system as dual-boot, keeping Windows for your important stuff until you've got Linux running the way you like it. It can take lot of fiddling and learning, and you want to keep Windows around until it's all OK (and probably after that if you ever use the machine for games or whatever).

Hmm, I think I should wait until I have a few weeks to spare (sometime in 2006 if I'm lucky, at this rate). I also do a lot of Microsoft Office stuff, so I'd need that to run with it efficiently.

Haven't had any problems with crashes at all with Windows XP (except when I picked up a copy of the Blaster worm, ggggrrrr.)

Linux isn't too hard to install if you go for a popular version (Mandrake, Suse, maybe Debian), no harder than Windows anyway. Partitioning your hard drive, or adding a new one, is trickier.

BUT: it takes time to learn to use Linux, and installing additional software (although you probably won't need much, if any) is a pain at first.
It is more reliable (but XP is pretty good), and has good software.
OpenOffice is Windows office compatible, so transferring work over should be easy enough.

Linux might have some advantages over XP for business purpopses, but not many; so I'd only change if you're feeling enthusiastic.
